Two seriously injured in Route 12 crash in Charlestown

CHARLESTOWN — Two drivers were seriously injured in a collision on Route 12 Thursday morning.

Police responded to Route 12 north of Lover Lane Road at 7:27 a.m. after receiving numerous 911 calls reporting the head-on collision.

Police arrived to find a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by Kevin Martel, 23, of Walpole, had collided with a 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Melodie Curtis, 50, of Claremont.

The Jeep was traveling southbound when it crossed over the center line and struck the northbound Oldsmobile head-on, police said.

Both vehicles came to rest in the southbound lane and sustained major damage.

Emergency workers from the Charlestown and Claremont fire departments as well as Vermont emergency workers from the Bellows Falls and Springfield fire departments were called to the scene and worked to extricate both drivers from their vehicles.

Both Martel and Curtis were airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon by DHART with serious injuries.

Charlestown Ambulance Services also assisted at the scene. New Hampshire Department of Transportation workers assisted with traffic control.

Traffic was interrupted for about two hours before the vehicles were removed from the scene by R&K Wrecker Services.

Charlestown police are investigating the cause of the crash in conjunction with state police.

So far speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call Officer Raymond Gosetti of the Charlestown Police Department at 826-5747.
