Former state Sen. Merrill files for House seat

DURHAM — After a brief hiatus from elective politics, former Democratic state Sen. Amanda Merrill of Durham is running for a seat in the New Hampshire House.

Merrill filed on Wednesday for the Strafford County District 6 seat vacated by Phil Ginsberg, who has moved out of the district, according to the state Democratic Party.Merrill was elected to two terms in the state Senate, in 2008 and 2010, and chose not to seek reelection in 2012. She also served five terms in the House from 1989 to 1998. She was the Deputy Democratic Leader in her fifth House term.Merrill is currently a member of the board of the Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP) and is a New Hampshire State Arts Councilor.

District 6 includes Durham and Madbury. The primary election is scheduled for Dec. 17 with the final special election slated for Feb. 4. However, under state law, if no more than one candidate per party files to run, the final election will take place on Dec. 17.
