Search for missing Conway teen hasn’t been reduced, officials say

CONWAY — It’s been two weeks since anyone has seen 15-year-old Abigail Hernandez as she left school for her regular walk home, and the search continues.

And though there are fewer police searchers now involved, authorities want family members and the public to know the investigation itself has not been reduced in any substantial way.

There are fewer searchers, as police searchers have covered so much ground in the Conway area that they don’t need as many officers, said Senior Associate Attorney General Jane Young.

“We may have less bodies working the case, but the volume of searchers is not what matters,” Young said. The searches in the area are “more targeted” than before, “depending on the information” that police acquire.

“It’s a narrower search,” she said. “But by no means are we giving up.”

There were no new details of the investigation released Tuesday. Hernandez has not been seen since Oct. 9.

Businesses and groups in town continue to raise money for Abigail’s mother, Zanya Hernandez, to help her get by during her present unpaid absence from work.

One running group that has raised close to $3,000 for Zanya Hernandez, the White Mountain Milers, started issuing missing persons posters with Abigail’s information on it for anyone to post.

The posters can be downloaded at the group’s site, www.whitemountainmilers.com/bringabbyhome.

The running group is organizing a downtown vigil for Abigail Saturday night at Schouler Park, and organizers are inviting those who attend to bring candles and flashlights.

The vigil begins at 6:30 p.m.
