Manchester police: Thieves stole about 750 pounds of copper

MANCHESTER — Police said thieves apparently used shopping carts to transport about 750 pounds of stolen copper wire from Manchester Recycling Corporation, 87 Union St.

Police responded to a report of the copper wire theft at about 8:45 a.m. Monday.

The wire, valued at $2,000, was removed from a truck parked in a secured lot. Police said the thieves cut the lock to the lot gate, then cut a padlock securing the rear door of the truck to access a bin containing the bare copper wire.

Also taken from the lot were several shopping carts that were used to transport the stolen wire out of the recycling lot. The carts, containing remnants of the wire, were left at an address on Krakow Avenue, where the wire was apparently transferred to a getaway vehicle.

A passerby reported three suspicious people in the area at about 5 a.m. Monday, but could not provide further description.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to contact Manchester Police at 668-8711. Anonymous tips for cash rewards can be made through Manchester Crimeline at 624-4040 or at
