Oddsmakers say Red Sox a slight favorite

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

October 21. 2013 9:42PM

The Cardinals and Boston Red Sox both won 97 games in the regular season. They each won their league championship series in six games. But the Red Sox are favored to beat the Cardinals in the World Series.

According to America’s Line, the Las Vegas-based service that provides wagering odds to many media outlets including the Post-Dispatch, a bettor would have to risk $145 in order to try to win $100 on Boston. Conversely, a successful $100 bet on the underdog Redbirds would be worth a profit of $125.

Boston has the home-field advantage for the Series, based on the American League winning this year’s All-Star Game, and the Red Sox had a league-best home mark of 53-28 this season. The Cards were even better at home (54-27) but the decisive seventh game, if needed, would be in Boston.

A successful bet on the Cards to sweep the Series would be worth a return of 12-1, with the odds of the Red Sox doing that are 10-1.

Boston is a slightly less favorite for Game 1, on Wednesday night, than it is for the Series as a whole. The Red Sox, with John Lester pitching then, are $-135. The Cards, with Adam Wainwright on the mound. are +125.

The “over-under,’’ (total number of runs scored) for the opener was set at seven.
