PETA to honor Newport firefighters who saved pets from fire

NEWPORT — Firefighters who saved four family pets in a Willow Road home fire last week are to receive the Compassionate Action Award from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, PETA announced Friday.

Hero, one of the pets saved from Skip and Rhonda Rollins’ home, was found as a puppy by their son, Army Spc. Justin A. Rollins, in Iraq just before he was killed by an improvised explosive device.

The Rollins had requested to adopt the puppy their son had befriended.

Tuesday night while the Rollins were out, a fire started in the couple’s basement.

Firefighters, knowing the couple had several pets, including Hero, worked to rescue all the animals until all were saved form the fire.

Hero suffered from smoke inhalation, but is expected to make a full recovery.

“Thanks to the firefighters, who are ready to protect all members of Newport families — including the four-legged ones — Hero’s rescue story can continue,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in a statement Friday. “PETA hopes the compassion and know-how shown by the Newport Fire Department will inspire others always to come to the aid of animals in need.”

The Newport Fire Department will receive a framed certificate, a letter of appreciation, and a box of vegan chocolates, PETA said.
