Football roundup: Portsmouth knocks off undefeated Plymouth

A 50-yard pass from quarterback Donovan Phanor to Jake Becker with 1:23 to play capped a furious comeback as the Portsmouth High School football team defeated Plymouth 27-22 Saturday in Plymouth.

Becker's TD catch, his second of the game, came one play after Plymouth failed to convert on a fourth-and-two situation near midfield.

"That's what happens when you can't get a first down when you need one," Plymouth coach Chuck Lenahan said. "They made big plays when they needed to and we didn't. We couldn't stop them in the air."

Phanor threw four TD passes in the victory, which raised Portsmouth's Division II record to 6-1. Plymouth, which carried a 17-game winning streak into the contest, is also 6-1.Plymouth led 15-0 at halftime, and 22-7 with less than 10 minutes to play.

"The difference in the second half defensively is we stepped up and started playing more downhill," Portsmouth coach Brian Pafford said. "It really was a gut-check. We just had to get tougher."

Ian MacDonald and Nate MacFarland also had TD catches for Portsmouth, which has won six in a row.

Plymouth quarterback Collin Sullivan ran for two touchdowns (1 and 4 yards). The Bobcats also received a 1-yard run from Jared Kuehl. John Thomas led Plymouth with 140 yards rushing on 24 carries.
Goffstown 28, Memorial 0: At Goffstown, quarterback Casey Gervais ran for 144 yards and a touchdown, and threw two TD passes to help the Grizzlies improve their Division I record to 3-4. Connor Bourque and Christian Marquis had TD catches for Goffstown, which received 11 tackles from Tim Comeau and 10 from Ryan Pinard. Damon Morin added a rushing TD. Memorial dropped to 1-6.
Mascoma 44, Somersworth 34: At Canaan, senior fullback Eddie Bianco scored four touchdowns as Mascoma raised its Division III record to 4-2. Bianco's TDs came on runs of 3, 10, 1 and 3 yards. Mascoma also received a 79-yard TD run from Justin Marsh, and a 71-yard TD run from Andrew Cash.
Trinity 44, John Stark 0: At Weare, Saikou Bah ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries to help Trinity raise its Division II record to 6-1. Brad Rhoades passed for a TD and returned an interception for a TD. Zach Poole had a TD catch and Will Shepard ran for a touchdown. John Stark dropped to 1-6.
Windham 29, Hollis/Brookline 14: At Hollis, quarterback Brendan McInnis ran for three touchdowns and passed for another to help the Jaguars improve to 6-1 in Division II. McInnis had TD runs of 58, 51 and 3 yards. Windham's Kellen Bail had a 4-yard TD catch.
Campbell 53, Epping-Newmarket 20: At Epping, the Cougars scored 40 of the game's final 47 points and moved to 5-1 in Division II. Campbell quarterback Christian McKenna tossed three TD passes.
Newport 38, Newfound 16: At Newport, halfback Noah Wade ran for three TDs and caught a TD pass to lead the Tigers (5-1) to this Division III victory. C.J. Lawrence (1 run) and Derrick Pare (6 run) also scored for Newport. Newfound (2-4) trailed 24-8 at halftime.
St. Thomas 45, Kingswood 13: At Wolfeboro, sophomore running back Ryan Bennett rushed for 78 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Saints (6-1). St. Thomas quarterback Trevor Martin completed 15 of 24 passes for 232 yards and two TDs.
Stevens 42, Farmington-Nute 6: At Farmington, running back Donald Pellerin ran for three touchdowns and caught a TD pass to help the Cardinals improve to 4-2 in Division III.
