NH College Notebook: Bedford's Turner starts fast for Quinnipiac women skaters

Bedford's Meghan Turner was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week for her recent efforts with the Quinnipiac women's team.

Turner, a freshman forward who played at Phillips Exeter Academy, claimed her first career weekly award as she continues to play impressive all-around hockey for the No. 10 nationally-ranked Bobcats (3-0-1).

Turner had registered two points (one goal, one assist) and a tie for the team-leading plus/minus rating (+3) in the Bobcats home-opening weekend.

Turner was also a key contributor on the Bobcats' main penalty-killing unit that denied Penn State on all four of its attempts last weekend.

Turner's recorded her first multi-point game with a goal and assist) in the Bobcats' 5-1 victory over the Nittany Lions. Turner's first career point came at 4:12 in the second period with the lead assist on Shiann Darkangelo's power-play game-winning goal.

She later capped the Quinnipiac scoring at 16:48 in the third period as she roofed a wrist shot for her first career goal.

Dartmouth to help with CHaD fundraiser: Dartmouth athletes will once again lend their time and effort to a fundraising event today.

The group will help kick off things off when they cheer on the youth fundraisers in the starting chute of the Cam's Course Family Fun Run. Just yards away from the starting line, in the Positive Tracks KidZone, more than 70 Dartmouth athletes will manage the "Tuff Gutz" obstacle course.

The Dartmouth women's cross country team hosted a meet and greet on Tuesday. Abbey D'Agostino, co-captain of the team and nine-time Division I All-American was on hand for the event.

"We're thrilled to have found an opportunity to use our running passion to promote a truly life-giving cause," D'Agostino said. "We knew our team would want to be a part of that."

All fundraising efforts from Dartmouth athletes or any other fundraiser under the age of 23 will be matched by CHaD HERO partner Positive Tracks, which provides tools and incentives to motivate youth into local action in their communities.

Solms wins Player of the Year: St. Michael's College men's lacrosse player Luke Solms (Bedford) was chosen as the recipient of the inaugural Coach Paul Schimoler Player of the Year Award for his contributions to the team during the 2013 season.

"Luke had a tremendously successful year as a sophomore defenseman, starting in all of our contests last year," said coach Pat Ivory. "Luke came to practice every day ready to work hard with a great attitude. He embraced the team concepts of the game, took individual coaching in stride, and improved as the season went on."

Solms notched 24 caused turnovers, one short of the team lead, while tying for third in ground balls (44). He was seventh in the Northeast-10 Conference in caused turnovers.

The award is named for the long-time St. Michael's men's lacrosse coach, who passed away on Feb. 15 following a short battle with cancer.
