Monarchs fall in OT

MANCHESTER — The Manchester Monarchs can’t seem to settle things in regulation.

In six of their seven games to date, the Monarchs have gone to overtime or a shootout. Sunday followed that trend as Manchester’s Nick Deslauriers scored with 4:28 remaining in regulation to force overtime before Wilkes-Barre Scranton’s Brendan Mikkelson scored 22 seconds into the extra session for a 4-3 Penguins victory before 3,186 fans at Verizon Wireless Arena.

The Monarchs have notched at least one point in all seven of their games and sit in first place in the Atlantic Division.

Sunday, Manchester played catch-up all afternoon.

Brian Gibbons’ power-play goal at 8:08 of the first period gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead. But Sean Backman responded for the home team at 18:29 of the first period.

Andrew Ebbett restored the Pens’ lead at 11:35 of the second before Andrew Bodnarchuk tied it at 18:49 of the same period, on a power play.

Gibbons scored again at 5:50 of the third before Deslauriers answered.

Jean-Francois Berube got the start in net for Manchester and made 19 saves. Jeff Deslauriers stopped 31 shots for the Penguins.

Manchester plays next on Wednesday night at Worcester.
