Red Sox head to World Series as American League champs; host Cards in Series opener Wednesday

BOSTON— With one swing of his bat, Shane Victorino put the Boston Red Sox in the World Series.

Victorino's seventh-inning grand slam powered the Red Sox to a 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series Saturday night at Fenway Park, clinching the series, four games to two.

The Red Sox will face the NL champion St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, beginning Wednesday in Boston.

Boston trailed 2-1 entering the seventh inning Saturday night when Victorino worked his magic.

Jonny Gomes led off the inning with a double, Xander Bogaerts walked and Jacoby Ellsbury reached on an infield error to load the bases. After a strike out by Dustin Pedroia, Victorino deposited his home run over the left field wall.

Detroit took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning. Torii Hunter led off with a walk off Boston starter Clay Buchholz, and Miguel Cabara followed with a single, bringing Red Sox manager John Farrell to the mound to replace Buchholz with Franklin Morales.

Morales walked Prince Fielder on four pitches and Victor Martinez followed with a double to score Hunter and Cabrera.
