Couple bought $2.25m lottery ticket in Conway


CONWAY - Mark and Susan Keenan's MDK Discount Beverages Plus store is a favorite place for locals who want a big selection of beer, wine and other beverages.

But the 1130 Eastman Road store is also known as a hot spot for lottery scratch tickets. About two months ago, the store sold a winning scratch ticket worth $250,000, and several years ago, a $30,000 scratch ticket was sold, Mark Keenan said.

Still, in more than 20 years of owning the store and punching the New Hampshire Lottery ticket machine, they had never sold a big winner in a drawing.

"For 20 years, our motto was, 'We're due,'" Keenan said.

On Oct. 2, a local couple came in the store and bought an easy pick ticket that won the $2.25 million Tri-State Megabucks jackpot.

The couple claimed the prize under the Rocky Mountain King Revocable Trust and the Rocky Mountain Queen Revocable Trust.

Attorney Kenneth R. Cargill of Cooper Cargill Chant in North Conway served as trustee for both trusts, according to lottery officials, who would not identify the winners at their request.

The winners chose the cash option payout with a lump sum worth about $1.2 million before taxes.

Split equally, the jackpot means each trust will receive $458,977 after taxes, lottery officials said.

The winning numbers were 20-21-28-33-35, with the MegaBall 6.

Keenan said he knows the couple well, but he, too, wouldn't divulge their names.

"I was glad if someone was to win that it was a local couple, and it was this couple. They're good people," he said.

Keenan got word that his store sold the winning ticket while fishing in his boat on a small pond in Maine. The store receives $22,500 for selling the ticket, according to lottery officials.

"I was like, wow, guess I'm done fishing," he said.

The Keenans will give some of the money to local charities and some to the store's five employees during the holidays, he said.

"I'm also going to put down a new floor," he said.
