Lyndeborough close to announcing new police chief

LYNDEBOROUGH — The town has selected its next police chief, but the appointment won’t be officially made until Wednesday.

According to Selectman Kevin Boette, the board was set to vote to appoint the new chief at their regular board meeting on Tuesday night, but fellow Selectman Fred Douglas missed the meeting. The vote of the three-member board was held off until next Wednesday, Boette said.

“We are going to have a special work session next Wednesday and finalize it,” Boette said.

Lyndeborough hasn’t had a police chief since 2007, when former Chief James Basinas was ousted from the role when the town voted in a special meeting to eliminate the position of police chief. Basinas had been placed on paid administrative leave early in 2007, but challenges in court dragged out through the year, and in December, a special town meeting was called to end the legal fighting by making the position of police chief go away.

Since Basinas was removed, the department has had a series of administrators and officers-in-charge running the show, including current officer-in-charge Lt. Rance Deware.

In March, townspeople voted in favor of reinstating the position of police chief, a move opposed by the board of selectmen at the time, including Boette. But the new board, including Boette, Arnold Byam and newly elected Fred Douglas, followed the decision of the voters and began working toward re-establishing the chief’s position.

The decision was made to make the position part-time because the town is so small, and a search took place to find the first new chief. Deware was among the candidates for the position, but it is not clear at this time if he was chosen to become chief. That announcement will be made Wednesday.
