Starter pistol rounds found at North Hampton School

NORTH HAMPTON — Authorities are investigating after starter pistol rounds were found inside the boy’s locker room at North Hampton School Thursday morning, police said.

Police responded to the school just before 10:30 a.m. after receiving a report of ammunition found on the floor in the locker room.

After investigating the incident, Page said officers determined that the rounds discovered were actually from a starter pistol and they are now in the custody of police.

Page was not sure how many rounds were found.
Unlike a real firearm, starter pistols fire only blanks and are often used at the start of a race.

Still, Page said the rounds from a starter pistol could pose dangers.

“It’s gunpowder and a shell. It shouldn’t be in a child’s hands and that’s why the school was so quick to notify us. Why somebody would have starter pistol rounds is interesting to me. That’s very rare,” Page said.
Because the investigation is ongoing and involves a juvenile student, Page said neither the school nor the police department would be able to discuss the identity of the student or any action that may result from the investigation.
“While there is no danger to the community or the school, parents are urged to discuss with their children that playing with knives, ammunition and firearms poses an unacceptable risk to themselves and others and that bringing these kinds of items to school cannot be tolerated,” Page said.
The incident comes just a few weeks after police launched a separate investigation after parents and officials from the same school reported that an 11-year-old student had allegedly threatened to shoot another student of the same age with a shotgun on school grounds.
Page said last month’s incident is unrelated to Thursday’s discovery.

“There’s no connection whatsoever,” he said, adding that different students were involved in the two incidents.

The investigation of the alleged gun threat has since been suspended and no juvenile court petitions will be issued at this point, Page said.
