NHIAA grid tournament is clarified

In hopes of clarifying the football tournament selection process in each division, NHIAA Executive Director Pat Corbin sent out an e-mail Wednesday to schools and media outlets explaining the criteria approved by the football committee last March.

“After receiving phone calls and e-mails over the past two weeks, I sensed people were getting confused about the selection process,” said Corbin. “Nothing has changed since last March when the football committee formulated and adopted the rules. There still seems to be a misunderstanding of how the process works. I figured it was better to explain and address it again now, three weeks before the playoffs start.”Since Division I teams play common opponents, the win/loss records will determine the top two playoff teams from each of the four conferences. Each Division I team plays its conference rivals once and crosses over to play another set of conference teams.

In Divisions II and III, a point rating system will be used to determine the top two playoff teams from each of the four conferences. That’s because unlike Division I, each team in Division II and III plays uncommon opponents.

The point rating system rewards teams with 10 points for every win plus two points for every win from your beaten opponent throughout the season.

For example, if Portsmouth beats Plymouth (6-0) this weekend, the Clippers get 10 points for winning the game. For beating Plymouth, Portsmouth gets an additional 12 points since Plymouth has already won six games, each worth two points.

If Plymouth wins the week after it plays Portsmouth, the Clippers would get an additional two points in their column for beating the Bobcats.

The point-rating system will be used in each division to re-seed the four conference champions for the semifinal and championship playoff games.
