Police try to determine why man died after Route 4 crash

NOTTINGHAM — Police are attempting to reconstruct the last 48 hours of a man’s life after he died following an accident along Route 4 Tuesday.

Police Chief Gunner Foss said the man, whose identity has not been released as officers are still notifying family members, died after being taken to Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a car accident.

Police, firefighters and emergency personnel from Northwood and Nottingham responded around 2:50 p.m. after the man, who was driving a Chevy Yukon, was briefly trapped after his SUV struck a tree along Old Turnpike Road — Route 4.

“It was pretty well mangled,” Foss said.

Foss said the man, who was helped out of the SUV by passersby, was alive and appeared responsive at the scene. He added the man died sometime afterward.

“We don’t know at this point whether any medical issue occurred,” Foss said, adding investigators plan to look into the crash.
