Charles Normil

MANCHESTER — The former Lawrence, Mass., man accused of maiming a Bedford doctor and partially blinding and sexually mutilating his wife during an apparent Bedford home invasion last fall could not answer to the charges Wednesday because he remains jailed out of state.

Charles Normil, 33, could not appear at his arraignment in Hillsborough County Superior Court on charges of attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, four counts of rape, burglary and falsifying evidence because he is incarcerated pending trial on a separate home invasion, attack and burglary that occurred in Methuen, Mass., last Dec. 14.

Hillsborough County Attorney Patricia LaFrance asked the court to issue a default warrant against Normil and have a detainer placed on him. He currently is jailed at Essex County House of Correction in Middleton, Mass.

LaFrance said she intends to extradite Normil to New Hampshire, but needs to coordinate this with Massachusetts authorities.

A Hillsborough County grand jury handed up 13 indictments against Normil Sept. 20 in connection with the brutal attacks on Dr. Eduardo Quesada, 53, and his wife, Sonia, 29, during a Nov. 24 break-in at their 7 Proclamation Court home in Bedford.

Authorities say the attacks occurred during a random home invasion motivated by financial gain. The couple’s then 2-year-old daughter was unharmed.

A second suspect in the home invasion and burglary remains in federal custody. Authorities refused to release his identity.

Six weeks after the attack, police found Sonia Quesada dead and her husband unconscious inside his mother’s Bedford condominium. A pile of prescription drugs was nearby. The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Sonia Quesada died from a prescription drug overdose, though the manner of her death remains undetermined. Authorities have said it is not a homicide.

Normil is accused of stabbing Dr. Quesada repeatedly in the head with a screwdriver, resulting in facial fractures and bleeding on the brain.

He also is charged with physically assaulting Sonia Quesada — resulting in the loss of one eye — and sexually assaulting her with a coat hanger.

Indictments also charge him with falsifying evidence by allegedly tossing some items in water and Dr. Quesada’s wallet in the woods.

Normil, is set to stand trial Jan. 13 in Essex County Superior Court in the Methuen attack.
