Salem makes Halloween the night for trick-or-treating
SALEM — Over the past several years, it has gotten a little tricky for parents to determine just when town-sponsored trick-or-treating will be held.
Although typically on Halloween night itself, there had been years when trick-or-treating was moved to a weekend night. And two years ago, a Halloween blizzard wreaked havoc on any kind of set trick-or-treating hours.
But Salem Selectman Pat Hargreaves believes there is only one proper night for trick-or-treating that will end the confusion, and that is Halloween night itself.
Recently, Salem selectmen unanimously voted to establish trick-or-treating hours from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31.
In addition, the board also unanimously supported Hargreaves motion to keep trick-or-treating hours on Halloween night into the foreseeable future.
“Every year, the hours are brought in front of us,” said Hargreaves. “Why not set them permanently for every year for Oct. 31 until they are rescinded by a future board?”
