UNH football team still ranked No. 25

A 40-point blowout win didn’t exactly vault the Wildcats higher in the polls, but they did remain a Top 25 football team for another week. As for the hockey team, the Wildcats remained in the same spot in one poll and dropped one spot in another.

A 59-19 victory against the University of Rhode Island Saturday at Cowell Stadium in Durham allowed the University of New Hampshire to remain at No. 25 in the latest Sports Network Football Poll released Monday.

It was a different story in the FCS Coaches Poll. The Wildcats actually received no credit for the win as they tumbled one spot to No. 23 overall.

Playing before a Homecoming crowd of 18,412, UNH quarterback Sean Goldrich passed for two touchdowns.

He went 18-for-26 for 241 yards. He also had a career-high 94 rushing yards on 14 attempts and rushed for a score.

Mike MacArthur of North Hampton booted his 40th career field goal, a 24-yarder. He is now tied with Connor McCormick (2002-05) for UNH’s all-time field goals.

New Hampshire outscored Rhode Island, 35-7, in the second half.

UNH (2-3), which improved to 24-2 in its last 26 home games, welcomes No. 12 Villanova (4-2) Saturday in a noon start.

In ice hockey, Dick Umile’s team (1-1) dropped one spot to No. 13 overall in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine 2013-14 men’s college hockey poll. In the USCHO.com Division I men’s poll, UNH remained in the No. 13 spot.

Next Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m., the Wildcats will host No. 5 ranked Michigan (2-0) at the Whittemore Center.
