Monarchs work overtime, beat P-Bruins, 3-2

For the third time in as many games this season, the Manchester Monarchs worked overtime.

Manchester defeated host Providence 3-2 in a shootout Friday night, improving to 2-0-1. The Monarchs play at Bridgeport on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Tyler Toffoli, Jordan Weal and Andy Andreoff scored goals in the shootout for Manchester while goalie Martin Jones stopped three of four shots (all but Ryan Spooner).

The Bruins (1-1-1) skated a power play in the extra session when Manchester was whistled for too many men on the ice, but could not score to end the game.

Manchester trailed 2-0 in the third period before defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk blasted a power-play goal past Niklas Svedberg at 5:10 to make it 2-1.

Brandon Kozun, who assisted on the Bodnarchuk goal, tied the game at 2-2 at 17:41. Weal picked up assists on both goals.

Nick Johnson gave Providence a 1-0 lead at 7:40 of the second period, deflecting a Zach Trotman shot from the point. It was Johnson's third goal of the season.

Jared Knight pushed the Bruins lead to 2-0 with a goal at 12:42 of the second.

The game was delayed 45 minutes due to the Monarchs arriving late because of heavy traffic.
