MANCHESTER -- Four teams, two games on two fields and a combined record of 34-4-0 all added up to one solid afternoon of soccer at the Derryfield School.

Derryfield hosted the boys’ and girls’ teams from Sunapee Wednesday. When the dust had cleared, Sunapee had handed the Derryfield girls their first loss, 2-1, and the boys’ teams played to a 2-2 draw when 100 minutes of play was unable to sort it out.

On the turf field, freshman sensation Gabi Brummett gave Derryfield a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when she converted an Emma Garfield pass, but second-half goals from Abby Armstrong and Rose Webb pushed the Lakers (10-1-0) to the win and dropped the Cougars (9-1-0) into the loss column for the first time.

Meanwhile on the grass field down the street, the Sunapee boys (7-2-1) held their own with the defending Division IV champion Cougars (9-1-1).

“I’ve been coaching 16 years and I think every other game with them goes to overtime,” said Sunapee head coach Ike Iacopino.Ethan Weinstein gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead, but a penalty kick goal from Jared Shoneberger and Griffin Phaneuf tally a few minutes later gave Derryfield a 2-1 lead at halftime. Nick Skarin sank a penalty kick try for Sunapee in the 47th minute that tied the game at 2-2.

The teams played a spirited couple of overtime sessions and Derryfield had several golden opportunities, but Lakers goalie James Fitzgerald made several sparkling saves.

“That’s been our issue this year is finishing,” said Derryfield coach Jeff Cousineau. “We had plenty of chances to put it away. Their goalkeeper made some great saves.”

LAKERS ON THE RISE: Another Lakers team, the one from Inter-Lakes of Meredith, has turned things around thanks to sophomore Caitlin Rotonnelli.

After years of futility, Inter-Lakes is 8-3-0 and poised to make some noise in the Division III girls’ ranks.

Rotonnelli led the team in goals with 26 last season as a freshman and entered this week with 22 goals already this season, with seven hat tricks.

______

TOP FIVE GIRLS’ TEAMS: No. 1 Exeter (11-0-0 and rolling along). 2. Portsmouth (10-0-0 and leading DII). 3. Windham (10-0-1 and breathing down Portsmouth’s neck. It’s a shame these two don’t meet in the regular season). 4. Pinkerton (9-2-0, loss to Nashua North drops the Astros in the rankings). 5. Bow (11-0-0 and owning DIII).

Honorable mentions to the Division IV leaders, Sunapee (10-1-0) and Derryfield (9-1-0).

______

TOP FIVE BOYS’ TEAMS: No. 1. Hanover (11-0-0, still the team to beat). 2. Manchester Central (9-2-0). 3. Alvirne (9-2-0, big win over Concord). 4. Windham (10-1-0, leading DII). 5. Hopkinton (10-0-1, tops in DII).

Honorable mentions: Pinkerton (8-3-0), Concord (8-2-1), Bow (9-1-0).
