Footrace for the Fallen sets off in Manchester SundayStaff

MANCHESTER — The Manchester Police Department’s seventh annual Footrace for the Fallen begins Sunday at 10 a.m. just east of the new police headquarters, 405 Valley St., which is diagonally across from Gill Stadium, where runners will cross the finish line of the 5K race.
The race is along a new course, beginning on Valley Street and affecting traffic on Valley, Willow, Hayward, Elm, Bridge, Chestnut, Auburn and Maple streets, where motor vehicle traffic will be restricted to ensure the safety of the participants during the race.
The Footrace for the Fallen began in 2007, the year after Officer Michael Briggs was killed in the line of duty, but it honors all four Manchester Police Officers who have died in the line of duty: Officer Briggs, Officer Ralph Miller, Inspector William Moher and Sgt. Henry McAllister, as well as all officers who have been killed in the line of duty.
Proceeds from the race benefit the Manchester Police Athletic League (MPAL), a nonprofit organization that provides after-school and summer athletic and recreational activities to area youth.
The new course, which begins at the Michael L. Briggs Public Safety Building, is a flat and fast course, attractive to runners of all levels. This newly certified 5K race will start at MPD headquarters, pass the Valley Street Jail and take runners past the old Manchester Police Department headquarters on Chestnut Street as they head for the finish line inside Gill Stadium.
The Gill Stadium sports complex is diagonally across from MPD. Runners will cross the finish line at the 20-yard line of the football field. Then it’s time for food, friends and awards.
In 2011, race organizers began working with John Mortimer and Millennium Running, and Footrace for the Fallen now uses Millennium Running for registration, timing and course management.
Registration fee for the 5K run, or walk, is $25 and participants can register online at the race website: www.footraceforthefallen.org. Race-day registration and bib and T-shirt pickup will start at 8 a.m. Sunday inside the main gate of Gill Stadium, on the Valley Street side.
Parking is available on the Beech Street side of Gill Stadium and in and around the parking lot of the JFK Coliseum.
Bathrooms are located inside the gate at Gill Stadium, on either side of the grandstands, and there will also be portable toilets in the visitor parking lot at the Manchester Police Department.
