Finally, Tampa Bay's Sam Fuld gets to meet new son

No one on the Tampa Bay Rays was more eagerly looking forward to returning home after what turned into a 12-day, five-city road trip than reserve outfielder and Durham, N.H., native Sam Fuld, who became a father for the third time five days into the journey.

Fuld’s wife, Sarah, gave birth to their second son, William, on Sept. 28. As of Saturday, Fuld had seen the baby only on a computer screen and on his iPhone.

“Facetime is great and all, but I want to be able to hold him, and, in weird way, I want to change his diapers a couple of times before he gets old,” Fuld said before the Rays’ loss to the Red Sox in Game 2 of their American League Division Series Saturday at Fenway Park. “I keep joking with people, he’s probably walking and talking already.”

William’s due date was Sunday but he arrived eight days early. Fuld thought of traveling home to the Tampa Bay area on the two off days this week, but Sarah told him to stay with the team.

“Sarah gave me the thumps-up to stay with the team, and she meant it,” Fuld said.

A graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, Fuld did not play in either of the first two games of the ALDS.
