Sunapee ready to dig in for a new library

SUNAPEE — The Abbott Library Foundation has reached is fundraising goal of $1,325,000, ending the two-year fundraising campaign.

Select Board Chairman Fred Gallup, Chairwoman of the Abbott Library Trustees Terri Jillson White and Chairwoman of the Abbott Library Foundation Melinda S. Flater met on Friday to sign the Tripartite Agreement, allowing the construction of the new Abbott Library to begin.

Gallup also signed the contract with Trumbull-Nelson Construction Company to build the new 7,200-sguare-foot library on a new location on Route 11 to replace the current 3,500-sguare-foot library built in 1929.
“Our anticipation is construction will begin in the next two to three weeks,” White said Friday afternoon.

Construction is expected to be complete by next summer, she said.

The town has wanted to build a new library for the past 12 years, White said.
“It will be much larger. It will be a 7,200-(square)-foot library. It will all be on one story, there will be more parking and more land around the building better access,” White. “The space that we have right now is too small. We have limited parking, we’re on two stories, we have limited seating, no room for programing, no room for staff to work and we have one tiny office,” White said. “We really out grew our space many years ago.”
The $2.7 million project is also being funded through the $975,000 bond article that Town Meeting voters passed in March and $125,000 from the new library capital reserve fund, White said.
