Peak time for leaf peeping

The prospect of wet weather shouldn't dampen the prospect of tourists heading to the North Country this weekend for some of its best foliage watching, according to a state tourism official.

"I think that, regardless of whether it's raining or not, this weekend is going to be the best weekend to see foliage in the White Mountains," Tai Freligh, communications manager for the state Division of Travel and Tourism Development.

The weekend forecast calls for cloudy, foggy conditions on Saturday and rain for Sunday in the northern parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service.

"I'm not down on the forecast," Freligh said. "I think people are going to come either way. I think it's going to be pretty busy."

The state runs a foliage tracker at visitnh.com that helps predict when the leaves will go from green to yellow to orange to red, and feature trees with varying states of stunning, visual splendor. According to that tracker, this weekend is peak conditions for the White Mountains area and near-peak conditions for the rest of the state.

Freligh said the state may also benefit this weekend from tourists looking to avoid the crowds sure to come to the state the following Columbus Day holiday weekend.

"I think we'll get that crowd too," he said.

Freligh said the state's campgrounds will remain open through the Columbus Day weekend and that there is "a lot of availability" for open camping spots.
