In Rochester, an indoor tribute to veterans

ROCHESTER — Because many people don't get the opportunity to visit national monuments in Washington D.C., local veterans offer area residents a chance to honor the men and women who served.

Members of American Legion Post 7 plan to host the Indoor Cost of Freedom Tribute — which includes a 100-foot, double sized replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall – through Sunday inside their hall at 94 Eastern Ave.

Closing ceremonies are set for Sunday at 3 p.m.

The tribute – which is free and will open to the public throughout the day and night – also includes a display of gold "dog tags" depicting casualties since the Vietnam War, memorials for Sept. 11, 2001, and Fort Hood, information and photos about the Korean War, tributes for police and firefighters, artwork and documents.

Like the National Memorial — which is located near monuments to honor veterans of the Korean War and World War II in Washington — the smaller wall offers closure to some, memories for others and education for all, according to Mary Chaloux, business manager for the post.

Post 7 Commander Robert Talbot said the post invited members of veteran organizations, schools, nursing homes, emergency personnel and officials from the city, county and state levels to participate in the tribute.

He added residents of the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton plan to travel to see the tribute as well.

"They may be more apt to relate to the names (on the memorials)," Talbot said, adding this presentation, which is meant to honor those who served, is for everyone.

"It's definitely is to educate the community," Talbot said, adding he's pleased to hear how many schools are planning to bring area students to see the tribute.
