Hooksett man guilty of exposing himself outside Salem store

RICE

SALEM — A former car mechanic pleaded guilty on Wednesday to charges that he exposed himself while sitting in a customer’s car outside of a Route 28 department store.

Mark Rice, 44, of Hooksett entered a guilty plea on the Class A misdemeanor charge in 10th Circuit Court in Salem on the same day he was scheduled to go on trial.

Judge M. Kristin Spath sentenced Rice to a 90-day jail term that will remain suspended as long as he remains on good behavior for the next two years.

Rice was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine — with half of it suspended — and to continue with ongoing counseling.

He will be required to have his case reviewed in six months. Kristen Guilmette served as Rice’s public defender.

Salem police received a call from a woman on June 6 after she spotted Rice parked in front of a Marshalls store around 12:06 p.m.

Salem police Officer Robert Holland, who responded to the call, went looking for a black Hyundai Sonata with a Massachusetts registration that was described by the caller.

The car was being serviced at a local car dealership, but Rice had taken it out during his break from work, police said.

Police were told that the vehicle was parked about six cars away from the front entrance of the Marshalls store. The store is located at 265 South Broadway, about a mile from where Rice worked at Salem Ford, according to police.

Rice was taken into custody without incident.

Rice has been arrested twice before on similar charges — in Billerica, Mass. in 1996 and by Boston police in 1998 for open and gross lewdness, police said.
