ANDREW VELEZ

Manchester man charged in gun threat against off-duty officer

MANCHESTER — Andrew Velez, 24, pointed a gun at the wrong guy Tuesday morning, according to police.

Police said off-duty police officer Derek Feather was driving on Maple Street near East High Street about 9 a.m. when a man stepped out in front of his car.

Feather stopped and the man continued walking to the sidewalk.

Lt. Maureen Tessier said that would have been the end of it, but Velez then pulled out a gun and, standing a few feet from Feather's car, pointed it at him, through the passenger window.

Feather continued driving north to get his vehicle out of the line of fire while Velez walked away. But the officer kept track of Velez's movements as he retrieved his radio from a bag and called dispatch.

Other officers converged on the scene and arrested Velez on Jane Street. Police said he had a .25 caliber gun in his pocket.

"He didn't pick the right guy," Tessier said.

Apparently, Velez, of 343 Auburn St., had just been involved in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend and reportedly pushed her to the ground, according to Tessier.

Police also learned that Velez saw the gun on the ground behind a Walnut Street address and took it.

Velez is charged with criminal threatening, being a felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed firearm without a permit, simple assault, and theft of lost or mislaid property.
