Stretch of warm weather helps fair draw big crowd

DEERFIELD — Four straight days of sun helped the Deerfield Fair draw 155,200 visitors this year, which more than doubled last year's attendance.

"The town is very pleased that the Deerfield Fair enjoyed such a wonderful weekend; it was long overdue," Town Administrator Leslie Boswak said. "The fair is one of the town's largest taxpayers, and they are a long-term community partner."

She added that the fair has become synonymous with the town.

"When people think of Deerfield, they think of the fair," she said.

Sarah Lindquist, owner of Clearly Creative Agency, which handles the fair's marketing and publicity, said this year's fair was fabulous.

"The weather was gorgeous, the focus was on the animals, and everybody just had an amazing time. You could feel the energy; it was wonderful," Lindquist said.

David O'Neal, president of the Deerfield Fair, agreed.

"You could not have asked for a more perfect New England weekend for the Deerfield Fair," he said.

Lindquist said that along with the weather, this year's fair had a special vibe to it.

"There was so much going on," she said. "There was a baby calf that was born right at the fair. The horse-pulling is always an attraction, and a tractor was given away. It was amazing how many people registered for that. A lot of people loved the rides, and of course the food was great."

She added that, for her, the most memorable part of the fair was watching children interact with the animals.

"Seeing the kids for the first time be able to see a baby cow or horse or goats — it's just amazing when you see in their face all that joy," Lindquist said.

Boswak said that of the more than 155,000 people who attended the fair, about 114,000 had paid tickets. Last year's fair drew 66,000 people.

She said organizers at the Deerfield Fair Association did a fantastic job.

"Keep in mind that the fair is separate from the town, but they did a great job. They put in a lot of work. They are a great group of individuals who put in a lot of hours to make this happen," Boswak said.
