Power Poll: Crimson Tide roll into No. 1 ranking

Exeter High School's overtime loss to Bishop Guertin of Nashua Saturday night paved the way for Concord to take over the top spot in the Union Leader/WGIR/WMUR Power Poll of the state's high school football teams.

An overtime victory over Winnacunnet of Hampton the previous week had enabled the Blue Hawks to cling to the No. 1 ranking, but Saturday's 21-14 loss to the Cardinals at Stellos Stadium dropped Exeter to No. 5.

Previously No. 2 Concord, which improved to 4-0 with a 69-41 thrashing of Manchester Memorial Saturday afternoon, received five of a possible six first-place votes in balloting by representatives of the three statewide media outlets. Bedford, also 4-0 after a 30-0 rout of Salem Friday night, received one first-place vote and moved up a notch, from No. 3 to 2.

Nashua South, the only other unbeaten team in Division I, is third, followed by Pinkerton Academy of Derry, which has won three straight after a season-opening loss to Bedford.

Exeter tumbled to No. 5 but remained ahead of Bishop Guertin, at No. 6. Both teams are 3-1.

Rounding out the top 10 are Winnacunnet (3-1), Plymouth (4-0), Keene (2-2) and Trinity of Manchester (3-1).

Plymouth is the only other 4-0 team in the rankings, coming off a 35-14 pounding of Trinity Saturday in a match-up of Division II title contenders.

Two other Division II teams, Portsmouth (3-1) and St. Thomas Aquinas of Dover (4-0) also received votes.
