LONDONDERRY — Members of the Londonderry Middle School community are urging their neighbors to join them during the school’s annual Wellness Walk/Run Road Race.

Hosted each fall by the school’s Wellness Committee, the event began over a decade ago, according to staff member Mary Soares.

Since its humble beginnings, when a handful of runners and walkers took to the nearby Kings streets neighborhood on the other side of Mammoth Road, the event has grown to include teachers, families and siblings.

Sponsored by the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization, this year’s event will take participants on a 2.3-mile challenge behind the middle school, through wooded trails behind Londonderry High School, around Moose Hill Kindergarten and back to the middle school.

This year’s walk/run is planned for Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m.

In addition to encouraging students to engage in a healthy lifestyle, the event typically brings about a healthy round of friendly competition.

“There’s been many years where we have seen parents running against or with their children and celebrating their victories together,” Soares said. “In other years, students have challenged their teachers in hopes, perhaps, of getting a homework pass for completing the course before them.”

As has been the tradition over the years, this year’s student runners will also compete to become the middle school’s “Principal” and “Assistant Principal” for the day as prizes for the top finishers.

Students can sign up for the event through their physical education classes at the middle school, while older students and adult community members can sign up for the event online at

Each registrant’s $3 entry fee will be used toward upcoming Wellness programs at Londonderry Middle School, including an annual Wellness Fair and a variety of fun physical fitness activities for the parents, such as snow-shoeing, intramural tennis, volleyball, kickboxing and jump roping.
