Derry council to discuss increased water rate

DERRY — Municipal water rates could be increasing slightly under a proposal Town Council members are scheduled to consider in their Tuesday night meeting.

The plan calls for a 1 percent rate hike that will increase the average Derry water bill from $342.12 to $346.25 per year, according to town officials. The proposed rate increase was prompted by an increase in rates by Manchester Water Works, the wholesale supplier for the Town of Derry.

In June, the Manchester Water Works Board of Directors approved a 2.25 percent increase in its water rates as part of its annual budget approval.

The rate increase by Manchester Water Works directly impacts Derry’s cost to supply water to its customers, according to the town. Historically, any rate increase has been passed directly on to Derry’s customers.

The new rate will result in a new minimum quarterly base charge of $23.20, up from $23.03, and new usage rate of $2.53 per 100 cubic feet, up from $2.50 per 100 cubic feet.

Acting Town Administrator Larry Budreau agrees with the staff’s recommendation.

In other items on the agenda, the Town of Derry has been awarded a grant for portable radios from the state. Under the grant, the Derry Police Department would receive three Motorola APX radios, including carrying cases, batteries and microphones. The radios and equipment are valued at $10,613.52. Programming of the radios at an authorized shop is also included in the cost.

The agenda item was prepared by Derry Police Chief Ed Garone, and it is the third such grant Derry has been awarded. The department received 29 radios in the first installment and seven in the second.

A public hearing is scheduled to be held by the council before acceptance of the grant since the value of the property exceeds $5,000.

The council meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Derry Municipal Center.
