Pinkerton Academy retains Mack Plaque in sports rivalry

For a 13th straight year, the Mack Plaque resides at Pinkerton Academy.

Capped by the football team’s 35-14 victory on Saturday night in Derry, the Astros easily retained the plaque in their annual autumn sports competition with neighboring rival Londonderry High. On Saturday in Derry, Pinkerton scored wins in boys’ and girls’ soccer, field hockey, volleyball and football. The previous Saturday, the Astros’ cross-country teams scored better than Londonderry’s in both the boys’ and girls’ portions of an invitational meet in Nashua.

Londonderry’s only win came Friday in golf (210-212).

Field hockey

Pinkerton 2, Londonderry 1 (OT): Kaylie DeCosmo’s goal midway through the overtime period was the winner for the Astros (7-1). Londonderry’s Tiana Federico scored the only goal of the first half and Erin Johnson tied it in the second. The Lancers are 3-4-2.

Volleyball

Pinkerton 3, Londonderry 0: The Astros swept, by scores of 25-19, 32-30 and 25-22. For PA (4-3), Elizabeth Hicks and Olivia Mathieu had 11 service points apiece, while Mathieu notched nine kills.

For Londonderry (3-6), Madison Milton and Marisak Feenstra notched 11 and six kills, respectively. Maggie Connors led the Lancers in blocks (five), Emily Georgakopoulos paced LHS in assists (10) and Taylor Collins scored 10 points on serves.

Boys’ soccer

Pinkerton 1, Londonderry 0 (OT): Tommy Martin scored on a penalty kick at the 86-minute mark. Playing well for the Astros were Tim Wood, Zach Bell, Kyle Hicks and Sean Muller. Eric Werner was forced to make one save for the shutout, while Bobby Krause made eight for LHS.

Pinkerton improved to 6-2 and its next match will present a challege: unbeaten Hanover (9-0-0) comes to Derry on Thursday.

Londonderry dropped to 3-5-1.

Girls’ soccer

Pinkerton 1, Londonderry 0: KatyAnn Grochmal’s goal in the 62nd minute enabled the Astros to stay unbeaten (8-0-0). Sami Mitchell made eight saves to record the shutout, while Londonderry’s Merissa Brousseau stopped five shots.

Pinkerton’s next game is Thursday at home against Exeter, which also brings a perfect (7-0-0) record into the new week.

Londonderry dropped to 5-4-1.
