Roger Brown's First and 10: Goffstown's Gervais a real leader

IT LOOKED like Goffstown quarterback Casey Gervais was going to be the star of Friday night's Division I game against Manchester Central, then the Little Green and running back Jesiah Wade spoiled everything.

Gervais, a sophomore, had run for two touchdowns and passed for another to help Goffstown build a six-point lead late in the fourth quarter, but Central tied the game on Wade's 3-yard TD run and went ahead for good on Keegan Laberge's point-after kick with 1:39 to play. Central improved to 2-2 with the 22-21 victory.

Gervais completed 17 of 28 passes for 166 yards in the loss, which dropped Goffstown to 1-3. He also ran for 105 yards on 17 carries.

"He's a heck of an athlete," Goffstown coach Justin Hufft said. "We have two real good quarterbacks. We have him and we have a junior Matt Collins, who's also a good quarterback so we're kind of lucky with that. And we're going to use them both this year."

Gervais had two 5-yard touchdown runs and completed a 7-yard pass to junior wide receiver Paul Teixeira.

"(Gervais) certainly did some really nice things," Central coach Ryan Ray said. "Give Goffstown all the credit in the world. Their coaching staff does an amazing job. There's not many programs in Division I coached better than Goffstown is."It was a night of big plays for Central. Wade had runs of 27, 59 (TD) and 68 yards, and finished the game with 246 yards rushing on 23 carries. Central also scored a TD on an 89-yard pass from quarterback Anthony DiMauro to Nathan Guillermo. In addition to the offense Gervais provided, Goffstown also received 126 yards rushing on 27 carries from sophomore running back Connor Bourque.

"We're young, but we have a lot of good athletes," Hufft said. "Our sophomores are playing against other teams' seniors, but that's OK. The kids are growing. They're getting better each week, so I'm pleased with that."

The most surprising score from Friday night? It had to be Keene's 41-0 triumph over Spaulding of Rochester.

Keene (2-2) was coming off back-to-back Division I losses against Exeter and Bishop Guertin of Nashua, and Spaulding entered the game with a 2-1 record. Spaulding's loss came against unbeaten Nashua South (34-24).

The fact that Keene won didn't come as a shock, but the margin of victory was probably more than most people expected.Keene fullback turned quarterback Alex Parenteau completed seven of eight passes for 176 yards and four touchdowns in the victory.

Nashua North hadn't done much on offense in its first three games this season, but its new straight-T offense was effective in Friday night's 35-27 loss to Nashua South.North quarterback Brendan Martin ran for two touchdowns and passed for two others.

North (0-4) failed to score in two of its first three games, and its only offensive touchdown entering Friday's game came on a halfback pass.

South (4-0) received much of its offensive from quarterback Trevor Knight, who completed three TD passes and ran for a touchdown. South raised its record to 4-0 with the victory.
