Lost Mass. hikers led out of White Mountain National Forest

Three Massachusetts hikers who got lost in the White Mountain National Forest in Albany were led out of the woods by state Fish and Game Conservation Officers over the weekend.

Conservation officers received a call at about 8 p.m. Sunday that the three women were lost near the Bolles Trail, about 2½ miles from the trail head in Albany.

The women reported that they had climbed Mount Chocorua earlier in the day and were descending via the Bolles Trail.

But that trail has been damaged by heavy storms that washed out bridges and made sections difficult to follow.

The women lost the trail, and decided to stay put, making a campfire and calling 911 for help.

Cell phone GPS signals were used to track the women and Conservation Officers made their way through the washed-out sections of trail to find them.

The hikers were identified as Helena Passamonti, 41, Lucia Bader, 40 and Juliet Rice, 40, all of Milford, Mass.

They were led uninjured out of the woods at about 12:30 am. Sunday after a 70-minute trip back down the mountain.
