Visiting Portsmouth overcame an early deficit and then held off a surge from host Souhegan of Amherst to post a 53-28 win in NHIAA Division II football action Friday night.

Mikel Toar scored two touchdowns and quarterback Donovan Phanor scored two on the ground as well to lead Portsmouth (3-1).

Souhegan (0-4) quarterback Isaac Nevrla scored one rushing touchdown and another passing. Cam Kinney added a TD run for the Sabers.

Division I

Nashua South 35, Nashua North 27: At Nashua, senior quarterback Trevor Knight threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score to keep the Purple Panthers undefeated at 4-0.

Knight connected with Robbie Smyth on a 64-yard pass play to get South rolling two and a half minutes into the game. Knight later teamed with Jesse Clauss for a 25-yard touchdown and Malik Langa for a a 28-yard score. He ran for a 14-yard TD. Josh Perry scored the other South touchdown on a 1-yard run.

North quarterback Brandon Martin ran for touchdowns of 14 and 2 yards and hit Dylan Salazar for an 11-yard passing score. The Titans fell to 0-4.

Division II

Milford 35, Hollis/Brookline 8: At Milford, the Spartans rolled up 356 yards on the ground and improved to 3-1 for the season. Mitchell Vanuskevich and Harrison Urda each scored a pair of touchdowns and Evan Perron had one for Milford.

Vanuskevich carried 14 times for 93 yards, Urda seven for 122 and Perron seven for 130. Hollis/Brookline fell to 0-4.


Merrimack Valley 26, Kingswood 7: At Penacook, Ivan Niyomugabo completed 10 of his 13 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone to lead the Pride. The Merrimack Valley defense came up three goalline stands in the second half. The Pride improved to 3-1 and Kingswood fell to 1-3.
