Seabrook woman stopped for speeding hours before deadly Hampton collision with cyclists

HAMPTON — A driver who struck and killed two bicyclists and injured two others Saturday was stopped by police and ticketed just hours before on the same bridge where the fatal accident took place.

Darriean Hess, 20, of Seabrook is not yet facing charges in the 8:30 a.m. accident, which happened shortly after the start of the Granite State Wheelmen Seacoast Century Ride.

At 12:45 a.m. Saturday, a Hampton officer stopped Hess for traveling at 59 mph in a 30 mph zone over the Underwood Bridge on Ocean Boulevard.

Hess told the officer she did not have a driver's license. Police said Monday the officer issued Hess a summons on the speeding violation, and for operating without a valid driver's license.

Hess was released after a friend with a valid license arrived to pick up her vehicle, according to a statement from police.

Police said later that morning, Hess was driving a 2002 Honda Civic when she crossed over into the northbound lane and struck four bicyclists traveling north on the Underwood Bridge.

Pamela Wells, 60, of South Hamilton, Mass. and Elise Bouchard, 52, of Danvers, Mass., were killed.

Uwe Uhmeyer, 60, of Essex, Mass., and Margo Heigh, 54, of Danvers, Mass., were injured.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident is ongoing.
