WILTON — Police have released a composite sketch of a man wanted for questioning in the attempted abduction of a 7-year-old girl earlier this month.

On Sept. 7, a man driving a maroon pickup truck reportedly attempted to abduct a child playing in her driveway on Potter Road. The child was able to escape, said Police Chief Brent Hautanen, and her parents reported the incident to police.

Police immediately issued a warning to residents to be on the lookout for a 6-foot-tall white man with a medium build and short brown hair. He was reported to be wearing a light blue T-shirt and brown or gray jeans.

On Tuesday, police released a composite sketch of the person created with the help of the victim and filled in some of the details about the man's description. The girl said the man had green eyes and had stubble on his face "like a five o'clock shadow," said Hautanen.

"We're hoping this photo may jog some people's memories or lead us to more tips," he said.

Most of the tips received concern the maroon pickup truck. In some cases, police have been able to track down the trucks seen in the local area and rule out the ones that don't match with the case.

But there haven't been many leads regarding the identity of the man, and Hautanen said he's hoping the sketch will provide the missing link.

In the meantime, residents of the rural neighborhood are nervous in the wake of the abduction attempt and gathered in an impromptu meeting on Sept. 18 to discuss the situation. Hautanen said he attended the meeting at the Pine Hill Waldorf School to share the information he had about the case.

"The residents have talked about forming sort of a neighborhood watch so that they could keep an eye on things," the chief said.

Police have also been keeping the public aware of updates in the case through the department's Facebook page.
