UNH Notebook: A bye week talent search

THE University of New Hampshire football team didn't play Saturday, but that doesn't mean the coaching staff had the week off. Instead, the coaches turned their attention to recruiting.

"The only two (coaches) who stayed in the office on Monday and Tuesday were (defensive coordinator) John Lyons and (offensive coordinator) Ryan Carty," UNH head coach Sean McDonnell said. "Everybody else was out on the road. We had eight coaches on the road for us recruiting.

"They went out to their areas — Pittsburgh, Maryland, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire. They're going out to (see) some early games on kids we're trying to make some decisions on. We can't talk to them, but what we can do is make evaluations on them and get their early game films and stuff like that."

UNH picked up a verbal commitment from Central Catholic (Lawrence, Mass.) running back/defensive back D'Andre Drummond-Mayrie early last week. Central Catholic head coach Chuck Adamopoulos announced Monday that Drummond-Mayrie, a senior, is headed to UNH.

The Wildcats (1-1) will play a non-league game at Lehigh (3-0) on Saturday (12:30 p.m.). The Mountain Hawks posted a come-from-behind 29-28 victory over Princeton on Saturday. Senior running back Sean Farrell scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run with 2:45 to play.

Lehigh has also beaten Central Connecticut State (51-44 in double overtime) and Monmouth (28-25) this season. The Wildcats are 8-6 in games following a bye week during McDonnell's tenure as head coach.

UNH dropped a 24-21 decision to Central Michigan on the road, and then beat Colgate 53-23 at home.

"We still have to figure out if we can hold up a against a real big, physical football team," McDonnell said. "We kind of got some answers out in Central Michigan. Lehigh will be a much more physical football team than Colgate. They have some big, strong kids who can run.

"Defensively they give you some multiple fronts, even and odd fronts, and they do it with the same personnel so that's something you have to be ready for."

UNH announced that a 15-game multi-sport package will appear live on Fox College Sports during the 2013-14 season. In addition, Fox College Sports will air UNH's monthly magazine show "Inside Wildcat Country" for the upcoming season.

The 15-game package will feature nine men's ice hockey games as well as two games each for men's basketball, women's basketball and women's ice hockey. The first broadcast of the 2013-14 season is Oct. 18 (7:30 p.m.), when the UNH men's hockey team plays the University of Michigan in its home opener at the Whittemore Center.

THE HOCKEY EAST men's preseason Coaches' Poll will be released Tuesday during the league's media day at TD Garden. The Wildcats will play an exhibition game against Acadia on Oct. 5, and will open the regular season Oct. 11 against Clarkson in the IceBreaker Tournament at the University of Minnesota.
