Power Poll: Two points separate top three teams
After surviving an overtime scare from rival Winnacunnet of Hampton on Saturday, Exeter remains atop the Union Leader/WGIR/WMUR Power Poll of the state's high school football teams, but only by the slimmest of margins.
Exeter, which edged Winnacunnet 35-34 and raised its record to 3-0 as a point-after try by the visiting Warriors sailed wide left, totaled 55 points in voting by representatives of the three statewide media outlets, one point ahead of Concord and two ahead of Bedford. Meanwhile, three teams -- Londonderry, Portsmouth and Spaulding of Rochester -- moved into a tie at No. 10.
Tied for the second spot in last week's poll, Concord and Bedford had a much easier time than Exeter with their Week 3 opponents. The Crimson tied crushed Merrimack, 55-0, Friday night while Bedford blanked Londonderry, 19-0.
Despite losing, Winnacunnet (2-1) remained at No. 6, while Londonderry (also 2-1) dropped from ninth to No. 10 along with two teams making their 2013 debut in the poll, Portsmouth (3-0) and Spaulding of Rochester (2-1).
Portsmouth is one of three Division II teams in the rankings, along with No. 7 Trinity of Manchester and No. 9 Plymouth Regional, both 3-0. The rest of the teams are in Division I, including No. 4 Nashua South (3-0), No. 5 Pinkerton Academy of Derry (2-1) and No. 8 Bishop Guertin of Nashua (2-1).
