Mass. man arraigned for attempted kidnapping outside of North Hampton grocery store
BRENTWOOD — A man who allegedly threatened a woman with a box cutter outside of a North Hampton grocery store during a botched kidnapping attempt remained behind bars on Monday following his first court appearance.
William Larochelle, 31, of 132 High St. Newburyport, Mass., was ordered held on $20,000 cash bail during his arraignment in 10th Circuit Court, where he faces charges of attempted kidnapping, robbery and criminal threatening, theft and resisting arrest.
Larochelle was arrested Friday by North Hampton police moments after he tried to force the woman into a car Friday around 10:37 a.m.
The woman had been retrieving items from her vehicle while parked in front of Shaw’s Supermarket when Larochelle approached with a box-cutter styled knife, the affidavit says.
“Give me a ride to Maine or I will cut you,” Larochelle allegedly told the woman.
Larochelle then climbed into the woman’s car through the driver’s side door and sat in the passenger’s side, but the woman refused to get in. He climbed back into the driver’s seat and tried to start the woman’s car but may have had trouble with a standard shift, according to court documents.
“He attempted to start the vehicle but he was unable to,” police Officer Steven Janvrin said in a sworn affidavit. The victim told police she “theorized that (Larochelle) did not know how to start a standard shift car.”
The woman fled and called to some men in the parking lot for help.
Larochelle ran from the vehicle and into woods across the street, according to police.
Police from area departments cordoned off a wooded area near the Shaw’s Supermarket on Lafayette Road until Larochelle was found in woods near Fern Road.
Larochelle put his hands in the air and told police Chief Brain Page, “I’m coming out, I’m coming out. I’m the one you’re looking for,” Janvrin said in the affidavit.
The victim later identified Larochelle by his booking room photo, police said.
Police later determined Larochelle broke into another vehicle parked behind the Apple Tree antique store prior to the attempted kidnapping. He is also suspected of stealing a car that was left in the parking lot of the Jiffy Lube at 27 Lafayette Road, police said.
Larochelle is being held at the Rockingham County jail.
