MacDonald powers to ACT win at NHMS

Special to the Union Leader

September 21. 2013 8:16PM

LOUDON - Eddie "The Outlaw" MacDonald of Rowley, Mass. took the lead from Brian Hoar on lap 35 and held off defending ACT champion Wayne Helliwell Jr. of Dover to win the 50-lap Bond Auto Parts ACT Invitational Saturday at NHMS.

MacDonald started 26th in a 43-car field in the Hancock Electric/Grimm Construction No.17. Earlier in the day, MacDonald had been leading the K&N Pro Series event when he cut a tire and crashed, destroying his Pro Series car.

"I was worried for a while about getting by Helliwell and Hoar, but my crew had the car going good," MacDonald said. "The restarts were a good place to gain some positions."

The race was red-flagged on lap four for a fiery front stretch crash that saw 16-year-old Joey Laquerre slide down the front chute on top of Matt White's car.

Hoar grabbed the lead from Quinny Welch, who had led from lap 9, on a lap-25 restart after the second and final caution. "I had a great first four laps and came from 15th to 4th quickly, but when MacDonald and Helliwell came on, they were really stout," Hoar said. "My car just got too tight at the end. I probably chased Welch too hard."

MacDonald and Helliwell were running third and fourth, paired in row two on the lap 25 restart.

MacDonald's margin of victory was four car-lengths. It was his third victory in five ACT Invitationals. Helliwell's second-place finish was his third runner-up effort in ACT events on the Magic Mile.

Aaron Fellows of Croydon finished fourth, two car lengths ahead of Hudson's Joey Polewarczyk Jr.

Positions 6-10 went to Tom Carey, Welch, Jean-Francois-Dery, Nick Sweet and Glenn Luce.

MacDonald earned $7,500 with his win. The ACT Tour travels to Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh for the Fall Foliage 200 next Saturday.
