MANCHESTER — Two major events in the city today, the My Dogs Are Barking 5K road race and Queen City Stampede, a type of “Amazing Race” competition, may cause traffic delays and congestion, police said.
The road race begins at 9 a.m. at Derryfield Park. Competitors will leave the park via Circular Drive and Reservoir Avenue and head into the neighborhood north of Bridge Street and then return to the park, via the same two streets.
The race is considered “open” to traffic but Circular Drive and Reservoir Avenue will be closed and traffic on Belmont Street will be restricted from entering off Bridge Street as well as Smyth Road.
Drivers in the area should use caution when encountering runners. The race, sponsored by the Animal Rescue League, is considered a “six-legged” race with runners accompanied by their four-legged friends.
Information on the race can be found at http://rescueleague.org/petfair.cfm .
The first ever Queen City Stampede, which is an “Amazing Race” themed event pitting two person teams against each other as they move through the city completing challenges and figuring out clues to determine their next destination, also gets underway at 9 a.m. from downtown Veterans Park.
The competition will set off in four waves of 50 teams each (one every half hour) leaving from the park and eventually returning there once the challenges are done.
Police do not anticipate any traffic problems with the race, so no roads are closed. However, motorists are told to expect an increase in pedestrians.
The event benefits the Holy Cross Family Learning Center, 438 Dubuque St., and is sponsored by the New Hampshire Union Leader, Spectrum Marketing, Regency Mortgage, Radisson Manchester, New Hampshire Hospital for Children, Centrix Bank, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, St. Mary’s Bank, Runner’s Alley, Red Arrow Diner, Piccola Italia Restaurant, Palace Theatre, N’Awlins Grille, Ignite Bar & Grille, Hooked Seafood Restaurant & Raw Bar, and The Anagnost Companies.
