HANOVER - Gov. Maggie Hassan welcomed Dartmouth's 18th president, Philip J. Hanlon, at his inauguration ceremony on the Dartmouth Green on Friday afternoon.

About 3,000 people attended the event, which was held in conjunction with the college's traditional Convocation Ceremony.

Hanlon received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Dartmouth in 1977.

The ceremony marked the start of the college's 244th year.

"President Hanlon is well-aware of the tradition of strong leadership that has helped Dartmouth College become one of the most well-known and respected learning institutions in the world," Hassan said. "A tremendous source of pride for the state of New Hampshire and our people, Dartmouth has long reflected what the people of New Hampshire have always known: Educating our young people is essential to the progress of our state and of our country.

"As the country works toward building a new work force for the innovations and economy of the 21st century, Dartmouth continues to prepare students for a lifetime of learning and responsible leadership," Hassan said.

In welcoming Hanlon back to New Hampshire, Hassan said the state may have changed since his time at Dartmouth as an undergraduate, but the state's natural beauty and the individualism of its residents have remained.

"And our commitment to collective problem-solving continues to be as strong as granite," she said.

Hanlon is the 10th Dartmouth graduate to serve as its president. He took office in July, succeeding Jim Yong Kim, who was selected to serve as president of the World Bank in April.

Hanlon was awarded a doctorate from the California Institute of Technology in 1981. He had been a University of Michigan faculty member since 1986 and was appointed provost in 2010.
