Woman suffers serious head injuries in Sandown crash

SANDOWN — A pedestrian was seriously injured after she was hit by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon.

Fire Chief Wilfred Tapley said the woman, believed to be in her 50s, was struck near 127 Main St. just after 4:30 p.m.

The woman was treated at the scene and then transported a short distance to the fire station where she was flown by medical helicopter to Boston Medical Center.

Fire officials said it appeared the woman may have suffered head injuries, which they described as critical.

"The guys had a (landing zone) set up within a minute or two and the chopper landed a minute later," Tapley said.

Tapley said the woman was in the middle of the road when emergency personnel arrived.

Several passers-by assisted at the scene.

"There were a number of people there. There were passers-by holding her head still, talking to her and keeping her alert. That's the good part. People didn't run. They were there helping," Tapley said.

Officer Steven Winter confirmed that the woman was a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle, but he said he was unable to provide more information on the accident.
