Police seek identity of decomposed body found off Route 106 in Concord

CONCORD — Police said Tuesday they know little about a badly decomposed body discovered in a wooded area off Route 106 near the entrance drive to Walmart.

As of Tuesday afternoon, police said they could not determine the age or gender of the body, although police believed it was an adult.

Police roped off a wooded area located down a small embankment across Route 106 from the Walmart entrance. The road is known locally as Sheep Davis Road.

Police Lt. Timothy O'Malley said some trails run through the area, and homeless people are known to frequent the area, using it either as a cut-through or an encampment.

Concord has seen a spate of deaths among its homeless population. In April, Mark Lufkin was found dead in a homeless encampment; O'Malley said that death is classified as suspicious. In July, John Tonkin was found dead in a homeless encampment. His death is under investigation by New Hampshire State Police.

Last month, Paul Tinkham died several days after being beaten in the head at a homeless camp.

O'Malley said he does not think the deaths are related to the latest discovery.

He said police received a report Tuesday morning about the discovery. A man walking through the area discovered the remains. They were at least 100 feet from the road into the woods, and crime scene tape stretched from a guardrail into the woods.

Detectives spent hours at the area on Tuesday.

"I'm not going to call it a crime scene because I don't know if we have a crime," O'Malley said. A preliminary autopsy could take place today, and some information may be found to help identify the body, he said.

O'Malley said an initial examination of the scene did not turn up anything such as a wallet that could identify the person.
