Windham board seeks business, tax growth

WINDHAM — Promoting growth, which will enhance tax revenue, is a goal of Windham’s Economic Development Committee, the panel’s chairman said.

The committee met last week to review its latest strategic plan, chairman Ralph Valentine said, and it will meet again Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Information gathered from a town-sponsored Cost of Community Services study in early 2011 has also hinted at significant tax relief through commercial development.

Going forward, this information will be used at each of the committee’s meetings to review approved commercial buildings and determine tax benefits.

The committee is appointed by the board of selectmen and is made up on Windham residents.

Selectmen liaison Al Letizio said the committee’s role is to assist, counsel and advise residents and town officials on the merits of economic development in town.

That mission is best met by supporting existing businesses while welcoming new ones and making sure any future development is consistent with the town’s Master Plan.
