Candia plans for its 250th anniversary celebration
CANDIA - To help commemorate the town's 250th anniversary, residents and local organizations have been planning a series of events that will cap off in December.
Events still left on the calendar include a demonstration by the First New Hampshire Regiment on the life of colonial soldiers, Celebrate Candia Day, a fall harvest dance and a play. According to Semiquincentennial Committee chair Linda Thomas, all the events have been planned and executed using private donations from local residents, organizations, clubs and businesses.
Jesse Remington High School is putting on a Colonial Faire scheduled for Oct. 18, which is the same day that the Candia Community Woman's Club is having a harvest day. Also scheduled is a historical lecture scheduled for Nov. 12 at a local church, and a Deerfield Town Forest Walk on Sept. 22...“We encouraged organizations to do activities and try to tie things in. We knew we could not do some of the major things other communities are doing for their anniversaries, because we weren't asking the town for money. So we tried to encourage people to do what they could,” Thomas said...Another difficulty Thomas said she encountered in her three years trying to plan for the town's 250th anniversary was ensuring everyone in town was aware of the scheduled events.
“One of the difficulties in a town like Candia is communication,” Thomas said. “We have people who enter town from different spots and they don't all go by a central location where we can advertise, so I am not sure how attuned they are to getting local news.”..On Sept. 21, the town will hold Celebrate Candia Day, which will include colonial life demonstrations, colonial soldier demonstrations, a walking tour, food and displays.
“We love to do these kind of museum or old home day presentations just to educate people of what colonial life for a solider was really like,” said Craig Fogg, president of the First New Hampshire Regiment...Pat Larkin, who is chair of the Board of Trustees for the Fitts Museum, will have the First Regiment perform on the museum lawn during Celebrate Candia Day along with other demonstrations and displays.“We want to be a part of the celebration of the history of Candia because the Fitts Museum is the history of Candia,” Larkin said. “It has been the town's museum for over 100 years, and people throughout those years have contributed items and documents, so it just fits that we would be part of a historical celebration like the 250th. Everyone I have spoken to has been very supportive, and we hope more people will come out and help us celebrate.”Candia will also hold Incorporation Day on Dec. 13...“We will have another play where we will start up with Governor Benning Wentworth receiving the petition and the town fathers making plans to build the community and getting a charter,” Thomas said.
