Portsmouth boy hit by car on Route 1 now in fair condition

ALEJANDRO SANCHEZ

PORTSMOUTH — Fifteen-year-old Alejandro Sanchez is in fair condition at Boston Children's Hospital after being struck by a vehicle on Route 1 on Friday night.

Sanchez's baseball coach and spokesman for the family, Mike Young, said the boy's condition had been upgraded on Monday afternoon, but he remained in the intensive care unit.

Young said Sanchez was hit while walking home from a Portsmouth High School football game to McKinley Road.

His father had come to the high school to pick him up, but Sanchez said he preferred to walk, Young said.

"His dad went home, said he pulled in the driveway and could hear sirens going off," Young said.

Raul Sanchez began texting his son, and getting no response, headed down to the accident scene.

There he found his son inside an ambulance.

Sanchez hit the windshield of the oncoming car and then hit the ground with the other side of his head, suffering two concussions, Young said.

Young said he talks to Raul Sanchez regularly, and he says his son is still in and out of consciousness.

"Every once in a while he will wake up and try to get out bed," Young said.

The boy also suffered a fractured eye socket.

Young said although there is swelling in Sanchez's brain, doctors do not think there is any damage to the brain itself.

Young is the president of the Babe Ruth League in Portsmouth in which Sanchez has played for the last three years; his dad coaches and serves on the board of directors.

Young said many people at Portsmouth High School, where Sanchez is a sophomore, and the Babe Ruth League have reached out to ask how they can help the family.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
