WINDHAM — "Happy hippy" Angela Overman has a lot to smile about these days.
The Derry resident, who worked as a software engineer for more than 15 years, said she realized a lifelong dream when she opened her Windham business, The Happy Hippy Boutique, last month.
Growing tired of working for other people, Overman said she's excited about her life's latest venture.
"This is something I've been thinking about for a long time," Overman said recently as she sat behind the counter of her 11 Rockingham Road shop.
The retail store features a variety of handcrafted items and gifts, including scarves, hats, toys, jewelry, candles, soaps, incense, fine art pieces and smoking accessories.
Overman said all of her merchandise is either made in the U .S. or imported from fair trade merchants.
"We're a culture and community-focused store," she said. "Our mission here is to foster good vibes, love, peace and happiness."
During a recent visit to the store, Overman's own hand lathed wooden bowls and cooking utensils were among the products offered for sale.
Overman's husband, James, collects the wood while hiking at various locations around the state.
The store also features paintings by Nashua artist Samina Iqbal and handmade hula hoops by Salem's Janelle Hughes, owner of Hoop Love.
Hughes, who teaches lessons on hula-hooping techniques and creates her own hand-taped hoops, was present to demonstrate her craft to customers attending Overman's open house two weekends ago.
She said it was the perfect opportunity to give folks a little taste of the latest fitness trend.
Iqbal, who has been "drawing and painting for as long as she can remember," said she was excited to share her works with the Windham community.
Overman said she definitely plans to feature some additional local merchants' wares in her store on a consignment basis.
The Happy Hippy Boutique is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The store is closed on Mondays.
