Warner boy wins lottery and speedway essay contest
NORTH SUTTON – The New Hampshire Lottery and New Hampshire Motor Speedway made a surprise visit to Kearsarge Regional Middle School Monday to name sixth-grader James Donohue of Warner the winner of the essay contest "A Hero in Your Life."
James, 11, wrote about his mentor, George Smith of Warner, in his essay "Hometown Hero."
The buddies met through The Friends Program, which runs mentor programs throughout the state.
Since they were brought together through the program, the two have become very close, and James used his essay to talk about the things they have done together as well as what George means to the town as the only person in the Parks and Recreation Department.
"If it weren't for George, the sports fields in my town would not even exist," James wrote. "As you can tell, George has been a great help to me and the town of Warner, because whenever there is something that needs to be done, you can always count on George."
As the essay contest winner, James' school was awarded $2,500 and his class was awarded $500.
James and George won a trip to the N.H. Motor Speedway in a limo this Sunday for the 300 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.
